Notes#

From dark tea to brick#

The provincial craft account describes dark tea weighed, steamed, pre-pressed and pressed into bricks, then cooled and removed from the mould. Pressing gives the tea its shape; it is a later operation applied to already prepared dark tea.

What “black brick” means#

Heizhuan is a dark-tea product distinct from Huazhuan and Fuzhuan. The word black in its English name does not mean the oxidized red-tea category conventionally called black tea in English.

A change inside the brick in 1967#

The monograph records a 1967 change at Baishaxi: the separate finer outer layer and coarser core were replaced by a mixed charge, alongside improvements to both grades of material. A historical black brick could therefore have a deliberately different surface and interior. The book’s account should not be used to identify an undated brick or assume that every present-day maker follows the same arrangement (p. 578).
