Notes#
From steaming to smooth needles#
The heritage account follows the leaf from steam fixation to a smooth needle. Immediate fanning cools the steamed leaf and prevents unwanted yellowing. Shaking on a heated surface removes more water; rolling forms strips, and rubbing refines their shape and sheen. A gentle final drying develops aroma. Steam fixation is only the beginning of this carefully staged handcraft.
Yulu and Gyokuro#
Enshi Yulu and Japanese gyokuro share the characters 玉露, but describe different tea traditions. Here the defining craft is steam fixation followed by needle shaping; the heritage account does not specify Japanese-style pre-harvest shading. Plant material in the historical account#
Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 487) identifies the local seed-grown population called Taizi cha as its raw material. It also records selection of individual plants during a 1979 survey and subsequent propagation by cuttings. The passage describes both a local population and selection within it; it does not establish that every modern Enshi Yulu uses one genetically identical cultivar.
