Fu brick tea
Compressed dark tea defined by brick making and a managed flowering stage, with documented traditions in Hunan and Shaanxi.
Notes#
Forming a brick for flowering#
Prepared dark tea is conditioned, pressed and subjected to fahua, the controlled stage associated with the characteristic golden growth inside the brick. This is a manufacturing description, not a health claim or a test of food safety.
In the documented traditional Shaanxi route, conditioned tea is built into a paper-wrapped form, bound and pierced to manage moisture before flowering. Pressing and packaging are therefore part of manufacture, not just presentation added after the tea is finished. Modern equipment and other regional traditions may handle these stages differently.
A factory-specific route to flowering#
The 2000 monograph describes Yiyang Tea Factory adding an infusion made from tea stems and fruit before steaming and pressing its special Fu bricks. It then separates the warm, humid flowering stage from the subsequent drying stage. This account shows that moisture conditioning and final drying served different purposes; it is a record of that factory’s method, not a recipe required of every Fu brick (pp. 577–578).
