Tea leaves scented with the flowers of sweet osmanthus, Osmanthus fragrans. Green, black and oolong bases are documented, so the flower name alone does not identify the underlying tea or a single geographical origin.

Scented leaves, flower infusions and aroma descriptions

This entry covers tea leaves scented with osmanthus. Dried osmanthus flowers brewed alone are a flower infusion. A tea described as having an osmanthus-like aroma is not, by that description alone, shown to contain added flowers; check the ingredients and the stated method.

Notes#

Flower and tea base#

The Chinese flora Zhongguo Zhiwu Zhi identifies guihua with Osmanthus fragrans and describes its fragrant flowers. The Beijing gardening bureau describes their use for scenting green tea, black tea and oolong. The flower provides an additional aroma; it does not erase the processing that made the tea base green, black or oolong. This profile groups the scenting family, while an individual product should name its base.

12

A documented scenting method#

The bureau’s account starts with prepared tea and freshly gathered osmanthus flowers. Mixing and scenting are followed by ventilation to control accumulated heat, screening to remove flower residue, and redrying before packing. This describes fresh-flower scenting, not simply sprinkling dried blossoms over finished tea. Visible flowers alone cannot establish which method an offer uses.

2

Documented regional practice#

A 1989 Food Science paper by authors from Xianning’s special-products bureau documents osmanthus-tea scenting and describes established production in Xianning, Hubei. That is evidence for a regional practice, not proof that every osmanthus tea comes from Xianning or that the method began there. A flower’s name also cannot establish the cultivar of the tea leaves.
