Notes#

Place and flowers#

The 2023 geographical-indication requirements define the protected area as She County, Huangshan City, Anhui. They identify the scenting flower as Chloranthus spicatus, known botanically in Chinese as jinsulan. The tea base and the flowers have separate preparation requirements. This is a geographically defined scented tea, not a name for every tea that has an orchid-like fragrance.

Tea base and scenting#

The specification allows locally made fine green teas as special bases, alongside a baked-green base made from local tea material. Prepared tea and fresh flowers are mixed, ventilated to release heat, and left to continue scenting. Baking then dries tea and flowers together before blending and packing. The retained flower material is part of the documented method, rather than evidence that flower separation was accidentally omitted.

Recognising the style#

The protected sensory description includes clear pale-yellow or yellow-green liquor, depending on the base, a delicate orchid-like fragrance and flower heads that look like small beads when infused. These are the specification’s descriptors, not a tasting guarantee for an individual lot. Tea-base quality, scenting and storage still distinguish one finished product from another.
