eight factors
Definition#
The eight quality factors of Chinese tea evaluation: four for the dry leaf (shape, wholeness 整碎, cleanliness 净度, colour 色泽) and four for the infusion (aroma, liquor colour, taste, infused leaf). GB/T 23776 lists which factors apply to each category; scoring uses five factors (appearance, liquor colour, aroma, taste, infused leaf) weighted per category.

Common confusions#
- Popular texts sometimes list 嫩度 (tenderness) as one of the eight; in the standard factor table tenderness is judged within shape, and the fourth dry-leaf factor is colour.
- The five-factor (五项因子) and eight-factor (八项因子) schemes coexist: the eight are used for comparison against a standard sample (七档制), the five for weighted scores.
- GB/T 23776-2018 removed 整碎 for pressed tea, and 整碎 and colour for tea bags; powdered tea also omits 整碎 and infused leaf.
