Term · Market
production date
Literal meaning
production date
Definition#
The production date on a food label. GB 7718-2011 defines it as the date the food became the final product, including the date it was packed into its sales unit, and requires it with the shelf life, in year-month-day order and not added by sticker or overprint; tea is not among the foods exempt from a shelf life. GB 7718-2025 (released 16 March 2025, in force 16 March 2027) lets foods with a shelf life over six months omit the production date and show an expiry date instead.

Common confusions#
- Buyers read it as the harvest year; for pressed tea it is the pressing or packing date, which can be later than the leaf.
- Early export pu'er printed no date at all, so absence of a date is not by itself suspicious on old tea.
