Names and ambiguities#

Benshan sold as Tieguanyin

Benshan has been reported as a substitute sold under the Tieguanyin name. The institutional cultivar record itself describes good Benshan as having a similar aroma character, so resemblance need not imply that the plants are identical. A visual or tasting comparison alone cannot establish the cultivar of every finished lot.

Notes#

Plant identity and picking condition#

The institutional cultivar record places Benshan’s origin at Yaoyang Nanyan in Xiping, Anxi. It describes a vigorous plant whose tender shoots can coarsen quickly and therefore require timely picking. That helps explain why harvesting decisions matter, without prescribing one date for every garden.

Similarity to Tieguanyin#

The institutional cultivar record describes a full, fresh taste and an osmanthus-like aroma, with some lots resembling Anxi Tieguanyin. These are overlapping sensory descriptions, not evidence that the plants are the same cultivar. Benshan gives the botanical identity behind this tea.

Limits of the documented evidence#

The sources listed here do not establish a Benshan-specific national product standard or a reliable current share of Anxi’s output. General descriptions of its importance cannot support a precise production ranking without a dated, verifiable survey.
