Names and ambiguities#
Approval number
The figures "GS13001-1984" and "GS13017-1985" circulate online; neither was found in an authoritative register. The GI standard gives only 华茶17号 (GSCT 17).
A new species?
The proposed species "凤凰茶" (2024) is one paper's proposal, reported by a local government; it is not the accepted classification.
Notes#
The 2016 encyclopedia entry (智汇三农) gives its origin as Fenghuang Shan in Chao'an, distributed in Fengshun, Raoping, 焦岭 (sic, probably 蕉岭) and Pingyuan. The China Tea Science Society calls it the population that holds the genetic resources from which Dancong bushes were selected. A December 2024 paper in 《中国茶叶》, reported by the Chao'an government, proposes Fenghuang Shuixian and its Dancong as a new species, "凤凰茶", on the basis of a glabrous ovary. Its acceptance by taxonomists is not established, so the botanical name here stays at var. sinensis as before. The old name 鸟嘴茶 (bird-beak tea) is supported only by Chinese Wikipedia, which says Southern Song villagers planted 鸟嘴茶 trees; the phoenix-beak legend about it appears only in community sources.
