Names and ambiguities#

Where Ba Xian came from

The China Tea Science Society puts the mother tree in 垭后 (Fengxi) and says Liziping farmers layered it in 1898. The grading standard says a Wudong farmer, 文混, propagated it by cuttings. Both agree on eight surviving plants, 1,050 m and wide planting from 1958.

Notes#

Named selections#

The China Tea Science Society’s 2022 account places Ba Xian, Ji Long Kan, Xiong Di Cha and other named plants in this aroma family. Ji Long Kan is linked to a coop-like tree shape. Xiong Di Cha records two similar trees whose leaves were processed together: a useful example of why a traditional Dancong name should not automatically be read as a modern single-tree guarantee.

4

Ba Xian history#

Local accounts connect its name with eight surviving propagated plants and describe wider planting from 1958. They differ over propagation by layering or cuttings. The often-repeated 1898 propagation date is a reported local history, not an independently dated plant specimen; 1958 should not be presented as the year the name was invented.

Aroma and chemistry#

A 2014 study of seventeen Dancong samples identified isoeugenol as a possible characteristic component of its Zhi Lan group. The authors treated such compounds as part of a comparative classification, not as a universal certificate of cultivar, origin or quality. The aroma family is best understood alongside the named line and processing history; compare Mi Lan Xiang Dancong for a different orchid-related naming tradition.
