No single profile: Song-variety bushes span several aroma types (gardenia, honey orchid, zhi lan and others). Old-tree tea is valued for depth and length rather than one aroma.

Names and ambiguities#
"Song Zhong" on a pack
The name can refer to a celebrated old tree, a line propagated from one, or a culture-plus-aroma name. The name alone does not prove that a packet was picked from a particular ancient tree. Garden location, plant identity and harvest records need to distinguish original-tree leaf from propagated descendants.
Notes#
Tree, lineage and aroma#
Song Zhong occurs across aroma families; compare Huang Zhi Xiang Dancong and Zhi Lan Xiang Dancong. CTSS treats Wudong Song and Da’an Song separately. Propagated plants can continue a line after an original tree dies, so a surviving name does not establish a surviving ancient tree.
Protection gives a different kind of evidence#
Chaozhou’s Ancient Tea Tree Protection Regulation, effective 1 October 2023, covers trees aged at least 100 years. It provides higher protection from 300 years and special protection from 500 years, with identification, registration, records and periodic surveys. Protective harvesting must suit the location, tree and season. These categories concern conservation; registration is not proof that a retail lot came from a named tree or that a traditional Song-dynasty age claim has been established.
How to read older records#
The grading appendix uses 2009 source material, while later reporting describes deaths and new harvests. An age, crop or price figure is meaningful in relation to its recorded year and individual tree. Neither an exceptional historical sale nor a peak annual yield is a reliable benchmark for ordinary Song Zhong tea today.
