Names and ambiguities#

黄栀香 or 黄枝香

栀 is gardenia; 枝 is branch. The GI standard, the naming standard and the China Tea Science Society write 黄栀香. The grading standard's appendix writes 黄枝香 and glosses it 黄枝(栀). Both writings come from Chaozhou standards bodies, so neither is simply wrong; "yellow branch" is a literal reading of the second, while the sources agree the aroma is gardenia.

Notes#

Huang Zhi Xiang is an aroma family#

The CTSS’s 2021 account distinguishes Wudong Song, Da’an Song, Jia Chang and Cu Xiang rather than describing one cultivar. See Song Zhong Dancong for the separate question of individual-tree identity.

Reading tree records#

The account distinguishes a dead original mother tree from a propagated representative plant. A named tree, a clonal line and a plantation of descendants are different kinds of identification.

4

What a gardenia aroma means#

In a 2015 experiment using Huang Zhi Xiang and Rou Gui Xiang teas, two extraction methods yielded substantially different volatile profiles. The authors warned that heated extraction could alter some components. This is a reminder that an aroma-family name describes a sensory resemblance: neither a single listed molecule nor one laboratory fingerprint should be treated as an infallible identity test for all commercial tea.

5

Multiple lines in the botanical account#

Zhongguo chashu pinzhongzhi (2001, pp. 109–110) records several lines under Huangzhixiang, including Wudong Shitoujiao Huangzhixiang, also called Wenjiaxiang (文佳祥种). Its account describes a noticeable gardenia aroma and bright orange-yellow liquor. The historical heading thus covers several plant lines.
