West Lake Longjing

Origin and documentation#

This is a geographical subtype of Longjing, not a separate cultivar or a synonym for all Zhejiang Longjing. The flat leaf shape alone cannot authenticate the origin.

A named village, producer and documented cultivar help explain a product’s provenance. The name West Lake Longjing is an origin claim; its presence on a label is not proof of that origin.

Handcraft and traceability#

The local association separates the initial pan work from a later finishing pan stage, with cooling and sorting between them. These operations explain the flat shape, but they do not authenticate a garden. Hangzhou's 2025 agriculture report describes separate farmer and enterprise traceability labels, with applications, quantity controls, returns and cancellation; a producer and traceable label are therefore more useful evidence than appearance alone.

Reading harvest dates#

The city announces the opening of the harvest for a particular year. That date reflects the season's growth and weather; it should not become a permanent calendar rule for every cultivar, village or later harvest.

Sorting before the pan#

Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 87) describes separating incoming leaf by tenderness, uniformity and freshness, then spreading and processing the groups separately. Its account also distinguishes grades in the manufacturing sequence: higher and middle grades omit a separate rolling stage. The often-repeated list of Longjing operations therefore needs to be read with the leaf material in mind; it is not one rigid recipe for every grade.
