Notes#
Origin and name#
Longjing is broader than West Lake Longjing. The national reference-sample announcement identifies three production areas; a Longjing label alone does not establish West Lake origin.
How the flat leaf is made#
In the West Lake association's traditional sequence, the first pan stage, qīngguō (青锅), is followed by a rest that redistributes moisture and a finishing pan stage, huīguō (辉锅). The craft combines repeated hand movements with sorting; the flattened shape is made during processing, not a naturally flat cultivar leaf. This is a documented handcraft sequence, not proof that every Longjing on sale is handmade.
Cultivars and useful comparisons#
Longjing 43 is a cultivar, not another name for the finished tea. Longjing 43 and Longjing seed population identify different plant material, West Lake Longjing narrows the origin claim, and pan-fired green tea describes pan-fired green-tea manufacture. Together, plant, place and process provide a fuller description than any one name alone.
Quality grades and handcraft#
The 2024 national reference-sample announcement describes six grades, from Grade 5 to Special Grade, all represented by machine-pan-fired samples. A handcraft claim and a quality grade therefore answer different questions; neither should be inferred from the other. The announcement is dated evidence, not a statement that those physical samples remain valid today.
How the craft spread#
In its West Lake chapter, Zhongguo mingchazhi (2000, p. 87) describes tea specialists teaching cultivation, picking, manufacture and storage in other tea districts after 1949, particularly during the reform period. This helps explain how the Longjing name spread alongside a transferable craft. It is a historical account of diffusion, not a definition of today’s protected production areas.
