Names and ambiguities#

Why trade "ten aromas" lists sometimes swap Mo Li Xiang for You Hua Xiang

Both the Chaozhou GI standard (DB4451/T 1—2021) and the naming standard (T/CZTTBZ 002—2021) include 茉莉香 among the ten example aromas, and Zhongguo chashu pinzhongzhi (2001, p. 104) names 茉莉香单枞 as one of the six key cultivated Dancong lines. However, because only two small mother-bush lineages survive in the 2021 grading appendix, commercial overviews such as Jiemian/Chayu (2017) often substitute You Hua Xiang Dancong (pomelo blossom) as the tenth commercial aroma.

Notes#

Two documented Fengxi lineages and the 1992 rescue grafting#

Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 defines 茉莉香型 by its noticeable natural jasmine-flower fragrance and sweet-mellow taste, and records only two mother-bush lineages—making it the smallest of the ten GI aroma families in the bush inventory:

1. 茉莉香 (Fengxi Zimao): growing at ~810 m in Zimao Village, Fengxi, aged ~160 years (4.24 m tall, 3.84 × 3.22 m crown, 5.2 kg peak yield). 2. 竹溜茉莉香 (Fengxi Zhuliu): originating at ~600 m in Zhuliu Village, Fengxi. The original ~150-year-old mother tree (3.65 m tall, 3.1 kg peak yield) died after local farmers grafted scions onto Fenghuang Shuixian rootstock in 1992, preserving the clonal line in cultivation today.

What these sources support
  1. The Chaozhou geographical indication local standard DB4451/T 1—2021 defines Fenghuang Dancong as oolong tea manufactured within the protected Chaozhou area by traditional craft from lines and cultivars selected or bred from Fenghuang Shuixian (GSCT 17), categorizing finished teas into ten aroma types with physicochemical limits of ≤7.0% moisture and ≥30.0% water extract.

Scope and limits: Establishes the statutory GI specification for Chaozhou Fenghuang Dancong, whereas the voluntary national standard GB/T 30357.6-2017 defines Dancong generically without a geographic origin requirement.

  2. Zhongguo Chashu Pinzhongzhi (2001, pp. 103–104) documents Fenghuang Dancong as a collective group of 80 superior lines selected from the sexual Fenghuang Shuixian population and named after tree habit, leaf morphology, or aroma, while Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 catalogues 136 named mother bushes across 15 aroma groups.

Scope and limits: Documents how 'Dancong' evolved from single-bush selection and separate manufacture into propagated clonal lines, meaning a modern Dancong packet is almost always clonal garden tea unless single-tree provenance is independently verified.
