Notes#

Lao Man'e is a Bulang village in the Banzhang village committee, about 12 km south-west of Lao Banzhang in a straight line (inference from OSM coordinates; People's Daily says under 20 km). A vendor guide reports a village stone tablet claiming over 1,400 years of history and over 900 years of tea planting; it also gives the old-garden area as '3,200 acres' (probably 3,200 mu mistranslated) with trees 100–500 years old. Its tea comes in two outwardly identical kinds, bitter and sweet, told apart only by tasting; the bitter type gives the village its reputation. The Bulangshan township tallies 30,000 mu of 'bitter tea' (苦茶) as its own category. People's Daily Overseas (2013) noted that Lao Man'e old-tree tea sold for about a tenth of Lao Banzhang's price despite being close by.
