As in Phoenix Dancong. 《中国茶树品种志》 (2001, p. 226) notes a distinctive storage phenomenon in finished Jiang Hua Xiang: around the Lunar New Year, the dry tea undergoes "return of spring" (返春), when its volatile ginger-lily aroma surges back with renewed intensity.

Names and ambiguities#

Jiang Hua Xiang (ginger flower), Jiang Mu Xiang (old ginger), and Tong Tian Xiang

All three names belong to the same aroma family in T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 Appendix A.2 and Zhongguo chashu pinzhongzhi (2001, p. 226). The Fengxi Zhongping mother bush carries all three names (姜花香,又名姜母香、通天香), while separate old trees at Guantoushe (1,000 m, 姜母香) and Da’an (1,150 m, 通天香) emphasize either the spicy ginger-root warmth or the soaring floral top-note.

Notes#

Botanical monograph and the "return of spring" (返春) phenomenon#

《中国茶树品种志》 (2001, p. 226) records 姜花香单枞 (alias 通天香单枞) as a small-arbor mid-leaf clone selected from Fenghuang Shuixian with an attributed cultivation history exceeding 400 years (dating to the late Ming) and an optimal growing belt at 800–1,000 m in Fenghuang Town.

The plant reaches 3.9 m with a 3.6 m crown, bearing narrow-elliptic leaves (9.6 × 3.4 cm) with undulate margins, 9 pairs of lateral veins and 32 pairs of teeth. One hundred one-bud-three-leaf spring shoots weigh 113.0 g; spring shoots contain 2.3% amino acids, 32.1% tea polyphenols, 18.6% catechins and 48.2% water extract. Uniquely among the entries in the 2001 national monograph, the text records that finished Jiang Hua Xiang tea exhibits a "return of spring" (返春现象) around the end of the lunar year, when its ginger-lily fragrance intensifies again in storage.

Five documented mother trees in T/CZTTBZ 001—2021#

Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 defines 姜花香型 by its noticeable ginger-lily floral aroma and a sweet, brisk liquor carrying a subtle ginger spice (微微的姜辣味), and lists five named bushes:

1. 姜花香 (alias 姜母香 / 通天香): growing at ~900 m in Zhongping, Fengxi, aged >150 years (4.22 m tall, 5.2 kg peak yield), widely propagated across the town. 2. 姜母香 (Guantoushe): growing at 1,000 m in Guantoushe, Fengxi, aged >200 years (2.98 m tall, 5 kg peak yield). 3. 通天香 (Da’an): growing at ~1,150 m in Da’an Village, aged >300 years (3.65 m tall, 3.6 m crown, 5.2 kg peak yield), named for its soaring, diffusive aroma. 4. 李仔坪姜花香: growing at 1,148 m in Liziping Village on Wudong Shan, aged ~100 years (3.3 m tall, 5 kg peak yield). 5. 坑墘姜花香: growing at ~630 m in Kengqian, Fengxi, aged ~200 years (4.16 m tall, 9.6 kg peak yield).

What these sources support
  1. The Chaozhou geographical indication local standard DB4451/T 1—2021 defines Fenghuang Dancong as oolong tea manufactured within the protected Chaozhou area by traditional craft from lines and cultivars selected or bred from Fenghuang Shuixian (GSCT 17), categorizing finished teas into ten aroma types with physicochemical limits of ≤7.0% moisture and ≥30.0% water extract.

Full text · Clauses 3–5 (definition, Fenghuang Shuixian planting stock requirement, ten aroma types, and physicochemical table) · checked 2026-11-04

Scope and limits: Establishes the statutory GI specification for Chaozhou Fenghuang Dancong, whereas the voluntary national standard GB/T 30357.6-2017 defines Dancong generically without a geographic origin requirement.

  2. Zhongguo Chashu Pinzhongzhi (2001, pp. 103–104) documents Fenghuang Dancong as a collective group of 80 superior lines selected from the sexual Fenghuang Shuixian population and named after tree habit, leaf morphology, or aroma, while Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 catalogues 136 named mother bushes across 15 aroma groups.

Full text · Cultivar monograph entry for Fenghuang Dancong (凤凰单枞), pp. 103–104, selection history, 80 lines, and separate harvesting/processing · checked 2026-11-04

Scope and limits: Documents how 'Dancong' evolved from single-bush selection and separate manufacture into propagated clonal lines, meaning a modern Dancong packet is almost always clonal garden tea unless single-tree provenance is independently verified.
