Names and ambiguities#

Botanical referent of "Ye Lai Xiang" (夜来香)

In Chinese horticulture, 夜来香 can refer either to the night-fragrant vine *Telosma cordata* (Pergularia odoratissima) or to tuberose (*Polianthes tuberosa*, 晚香玉). Western tea glosses often translate Ye Lai Xiang as "tuberose", while T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 defines the group simply by its "natural night-blooming flower fragrance" (自然的夜来香花香味) and also files 夜合 (*Magnolia coco*, night-closing magnolia) inside the same family.

Notes#

Four documented mother trees in T/CZTTBZ 001—2021#

Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 documents four high-elevation mother bushes under 夜来香型:

1. 夜来香 (Wudong Shitoujiao): growing at 1,100 m in Shitoujiao Village on Wudong Shan, aged ~300 years (3.85 m tall, 4.94 × 3.91 m crown, 8.2 kg peak yield). 2. 陂头夜来香 (alias 陂头种, Potou): growing at ~800 m beside the stream weir (陂头) at Danhu in Fengxi, aged >90 years (2.82 m tall, 2.5 kg peak yield); first propagated by cuttings in 1989 and now the primary commercial clone for retail lots labeled "Potou Ye Lai Xiang". 3. 李仔坪夜来香: growing at ~1,100 m in Guizhuhu (Liziping administrative village) on Wudong Shan, aged ~200 years (3.7 m tall, 4.3 × 3.85 m crown, 7 kg peak yield). 4. 夜合 (Ye He): growing at 1,100 m in Shitoujiao on Wudong Shan, aged ~130 years (3.25 m tall, 4.5 kg peak yield), named for the dusk-opening аромат of *Magnolia coco* (夜合花).

Sources#

What these sources support
  1. The Chaozhou geographical indication local standard DB4451/T 1—2021 defines Fenghuang Dancong as oolong tea manufactured within the protected Chaozhou area by traditional craft from lines and cultivars selected or bred from Fenghuang Shuixian (GSCT 17), categorizing finished teas into ten aroma types with physicochemical limits of ≤7.0% moisture and ≥30.0% water extract.

Full text · Clauses 3–5 (definition, Fenghuang Shuixian planting stock requirement, ten aroma types, and physicochemical table) · checked 2026-11-04

Scope and limits: Establishes the statutory GI specification for Chaozhou Fenghuang Dancong, whereas the voluntary national standard GB/T 30357.6-2017 defines Dancong generically without a geographic origin requirement.

  2. Zhongguo Chashu Pinzhongzhi (2001, pp. 103–104) documents Fenghuang Dancong as a collective group of 80 superior lines selected from the sexual Fenghuang Shuixian population and named after tree habit, leaf morphology, or aroma, while Appendix A.2 of T/CZTTBZ 001—2021 catalogues 136 named mother bushes across 15 aroma groups.

Full text · Cultivar monograph entry for Fenghuang Dancong (凤凰单枞), pp. 103–104, selection history, 80 lines, and separate harvesting/processing · checked 2026-11-04

Scope and limits: Documents how 'Dancong' evolved from single-bush selection and separate manufacture into propagated clonal lines, meaning a modern Dancong packet is almost always clonal garden tea unless single-tree provenance is independently verified.
