Banuo is one of Mengku's sixteen administrative villages and is counted among the eight areas of the east half-mountain (东半山). Banuo Dazhai is called the representative village of the east half and the one with the most surviving old trees there. In 2019 the village had nine villager groups, 365 households and 1,265 people, mainly Han (six main surnames), with Lahu under a fifth; 43 households traded tea themselves. Over 800 mu of trees are older than 100 years. The village is known for tengtiao tea (藤条茶); the sources opened name it but do not describe the training or picking method behind it. A 'tengtiao king' tree over 8 m tall and over 1 m in trunk diameter sold its crop for over 70,000 yuan in 2019. Village rules allow only farmyard and organic fertiliser; gardens are weeded twice and tilled three times a year. Per-capita net income in 2018 was 9,800 yuan, over 70% from tea.
