Notes#

Identity and history#

Coextensive with historic Huizhou prefecture in southern Anhui, Huangshan encompasses steep granitic peaks, deep river gorges, and forested basins that birthed several of China's defining tea crafts. In the sixteenth century, Mount Songluo pioneered high-temperature iron-wok fixation, laying the technical foundation for modern green tea and early-modern oolong, while later centuries saw the rise of Huangshan Maofeng in Fuxi, Taiping Houkui in Xinming, and orchid-scented Zhulan tea in She County. Today, national geographical-indication standards and intangible heritage protections safeguard its indigenous large- and medium-leaf populations and charcoal-baking traditions.
